I may do a series of posts loosely related to pulling in data from Karbon to model and use in Excel using Power Query and Power Pivot. If you use any of these functions or have better ways of executing this code, I would love to see your comments.Specific use cases should be addressed in new topics and then linked back to this topic. The most useful and interesting use cases posted in the comments will get added to this OP.Template FilesLink: Human Accounting Mastermind Document RepositoryIn the link above, you will find template files for Excel and Power BI (coming soon). These files have everything you need to get started, but there are some additional setup steps that I will cover below.InstructionsHow to add y
What's everyone using for tax organizers? Tax software organizer? Or something custom built? We have been internally designing a personalized organizer that looks and feels more like a "checklist" than the stale, old tax organizers produced by the tax software companies. We are at a crossroad in our design and we would enjoy collaborating with those who've custom built their own tax organizers. Please reply if this would be you!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Human Accounting Mastermind - Collaborate to solve complex business problems through human-centric continuous improvement.
[UPDATE] Indefinitely postponedI’d like to try again with less rigidity and more collaborative sharing. Less seminar and more “Here’s a problem we had and how we solved it” and “Here’s a problem we have, how are y’all solving it” framework. We are exploring signing up for Karbon Intelligence to gain visibility in to all of the aspects of how our team works together and supports clients. We use the insights at a high level, but we are looking to go deeper regarding the length work sits at various stages, time to complete specific work items and more. Has anyone rolled out Intelligence yet and do you have any tips or learnings from your experience yet if so?
Curious to know how everyone uses the Client Manager vs Client Owner vs Other Colleagues on a client. We put tasks on organizations for bookkeeping and I’ve been assigning the Client Manager as the Bookkeeping Manager on my team. Other colleagues are then the bookkeeping team working on that client. How do you use these fields in your Karbon account?
Here in the US, we have many of our partnerships and s-corp companies extended. I don’t see an easy way to handle this in Karbon other than going in and individually changing the due date on each work item.Has anyone else come up with a best practice for this or have any ideas about how to handle it?
Zapier is a great tool that allows you to connect your Karbon account with more than 2,000 apps. You can sync your data with different cloud accounting solutions, sales and marketing tools, CRMs and much more. Here are a few of our favorite “Zaps” that can help you automate your workflow and save you hours within your week. Keeping your contacts up-to-date with your cloud accounting software:One benefit of this ‘Zap’ is that as you make updates to important client details within Karbon you can ensure that your other databases will stay in-sync with this Zap Trigger: Person/Organization Contact Updated in KarbonAction: Create & Update Contact in your cloud accounting appYou can also do this in reverse. Dear peer/Karbon specialist, I believe following are common in a firm practice environment. What is the best way to do that in Karbon? When we have a firm wide/team wide work (most of times, it is internal work) for all firm staff or team members, for example, I request all team member to complete same task, how should I setup this? Work duplication: How can I duplicate a work of one client to another client? I only see duplicate option for work template, but didn’t se duplicate work option for work? Anyway to do that? Thanks.
ProblemOur work types are tied to our service codes in QuickBooks Online (QBO). When one of our staff members add a work item with default work type, it doesn't map to any of our services in QBO. I manually searched for work set to default work type and added notes for people to pick the appropriate work type.Current countermeasureI put together a function that acts like a bot. I called it Gehn, and it checks work items to see if they have an appropriate work type. For any work set to default, Gehn creates a note on the work item timeline, assigns it to the work assignee, and asks them to pick the appropriate work type. The note includes a direct link to the work item’s details page, which makes changing the work type simple. Here’s what it looks like this in triage: Here’s a list of other things I would love to see automated:For all company phone calls, search Karbon for a business card with the corresponding phone number and add a note to the timeline asking staff to recap the call an
I like to think of Karbon’s Automators as ‘if this, then that’ rules. You let you set task and work statuses, assignees or more to automatically updated based on a certain activity happening (such as the preceding tasks being completed). They are one of the most powerful ways you can use Karbon to take care of all that boring admin work, and save your team a ton of time in the process. Here are 6 of our favorite ways that we’re seeing Automators being used. If we’ve missed any of the go-to ways you use Automators, we’d love to hear from you. Leave a comment below! Let your colleague know their tasks are ready to start. A lot of tasks in your workflow are dependent on others being completed first. If you’re preparing a tax return, the work papers can’t be started until the financial statements have been signed off. Or if you’re performing payroll, there is a lot that needs to happen before pay run can be scheduled. This might be OK if you’re the one completing each step in th
PurposeWe want to reduce the stress our staff and clients experience. Specifically, we want to make onboarding new clients easy for the staff to be perfect and a smooth process for the new client.ProblemOur firm uses GoProposal, and I know other firms use Practice Ignition to automate the proposal and engagement letter process. These two companies have integrations with carbon that add the work to Karbon. We like that nothing gets missed, but the work comes over to Karbon with several issues:incorrect start dates no due dates work on the wrong sub-entities no fee informationAfter a proposal is signed, we spend between 30 minutes and two hours, cleaning up the work. - Max Here is our struggle and my wish list! ... Skip Ahead:Introduction Examples Add a template-based work item to a list of clients Basic tools for running API requests (Python) IntroductionPlay along at GitHub: https://github.com/dchrm/human-accounting-mastermindThere are certain things in Karbon that I cannot automate the way I want, so I found that the API has worked in many cases. I’m curious how you are using the API. What problems are you solving? I’ll be sharing my implementations here and I welcome anyone to join and share theirs as well. I’ll edit this post with your examples so that we can start to build a repository of real-world DIY API implementations.ExamplesAdd a template-based work item to a list of clientsOur firm is focused on continuous improvement, so we quickly learned that annual recurring work items carry forward with them the poor layout of the year before. We are continually updating our templates with new learning, but our recurring work was missing out on the new way we were approaching work. We d
When sending out multiple emails at a time or sending out the same email to clients on a regular basis, I’ve found that having the ability to easily pull a templated email to send off quickly has been a time-saver. While Karbon doesn’t have email templates, here’s a suggestion I have for those that would like the ability to do this in Karbon. Create a work item called “Email templates” Give it a start date and a due date far in the future, so it doesn't pop into your work view or to-do list. Use the work type of Internal. Send emails to yourself using the subject line as the type of email and then add that email from Triage to the work item "Email templates". This way, you can easily copy from these emails and paste into a new email to the client.
Dear karbon and peers, Currently, the insights are all work based, not task based. This is not working and not making insights helpful in real world team management. Work consisted of a lot of tasks completed by different team members. their performance on meeting deadline etc. are all task based, rather than work based. Accounting firm ‘s team consisted different level of staff and normaly the work in charges are senior team members, for those supporting staff and junior team members, they are not work in-charge, their performance is mainly based on the data of task rather than the work. I trust a bookkeeper firm may has less feeling of this since they are most time contractor based and all the team member does the same work. But for a proper accounting firm, we have a vertical team (event it is flattened, we still have 2-3 levels, partner, manager/incharge/ preparer. With current insights, we only can see the performance result of work assignee (normally in-charge or manager), but

For 2020 and 2021, Karbon has become carbon neutral by auditing and offsetting our carbon footprint (1K tons of CO2 in 2020, and 1.7K tons of CO2 in 2021). With the help of RyeStrategy, we have passed along the understanding, details, and templates to enable your practice to become carbon neutral, and also to perform carbon neutrality advisory with your clients.Question, is sustainability something that interests you? Have you done this with your clients? What resources would you like to have? If interested in the topic of sustainability, give a like to this post. I want to measure the level of interest. If you have some thoughts, comments or questions to add, leave a comment. I would personally like to know your thoughts and what Karbon can do to help to make a broader impact in the world we live in (specifically in the area of sustainability and social accounting).
Your Kanban board helps you to visualize what’s important, understand priorities and keep everyone on the same page. We see Karbon customers sort their Kanban columns and apply filters in lots of interesting ways, to create a dashboard that gives them exactly what they need. Here are the 5 of the most common Kanban Board dashboards that we see, with the steps to replicate it in Karbon for yourself. If you recreate any of these, don’t forget to save it to come back to again later! What other dashboards have we missed? We’d love to hear what your go-to custom Kanban dashboards are in the comments. #1.
