Use surcharges to offset or fully cover the costs of processing card payments. Your surcharge rate will be clearly displayed to your clients during payment. They can choose between paying via card (with a surcharge) or opting for direct debit (which won't have a surcharge).

Automated Compliance for Card Types

We’ll help your surcharges comply with card network regulations in the US by automatically removing any surcharge applied to debit and prepaid cards.

Simple Setup

You can use this feature whenever you're ready. Just add Manage Payments Account under Billing permissions. Go to Billing > Settings > Card Payment Surcharges to configure your surcharge rates according to regional regulations.

Custom Client Options

Customize surcharge rates for individual clients as needed. Navigate to Contacts > Search > Find the contact > Details tab > Payment Settings to set or adjust surcharge rates for specific clients. You can also choose to disable surcharges for individual clients if you want to.

Easy Management

If you need to remove surcharges entirely, simply go to Settings > Billing > Edit > Delete. Keep in mind that removing surcharges will also delete any custom overrides you’ve set. You can reapply surcharges in the future as needed.

Important: This feature is designed to help manage costs but does not replace legal advice. Please make sure you follow your local regulations by consulting with legal counsel as needed.

I just set this up and it’s super easy to set up the default and change an individual customer. It’s perfect.

One thing I would love is to have different surcharge rates by credit card type. Our AMEX fees are 3.9% compared to lower rates for other cards.

@Jaime Daniels, based on the instructions that I read on the setup pages, Karbon is encouraging everyone to make sure they are following their local regulations. The option is allowed in Karbon, but you need to make sure you’re okay.

@Jaime Daniels Thank you, Jaime.

I will make sure to edit our post for more clarity and just to make sure it’s clear.

Karbon will assist you with your own compliance in certain aspects, namely in removing surcharges from cards that cannot be surcharged due to various card network rules (prepaid and debit).

However, compliance is your responsibility. As Max said, rules can be complex and may change over time, so it’s not something we can manage comfortably for many firms.

@max thanks for the feedback; that’s awesome.

In the interim, you could always check your Payments Export (Billing > Finance > View More Payments > Export) to identify firms using these higher-fee cards and then check their saved payment details to confirm they’ve saved one of these cards. Then you could set a custom rate for that firm.

Certainly an excellent bit of feedback.

This is exactly what I did. 😁
